1. Service Your Cooling System Before the Next Heat Wave
Whether you run a central air conditioner or a heat pump, mid-summer is when these systems work hardest — and when neglected units fail.
- Replace or clean filters monthly during heavy use. A clogged filter can cut efficiency by 15% or more.
- Clear debris around the outdoor unit. Keep at least 60 cm of clearance; cottonwood fluff is a notorious coil-clogger in the Thompson Valley.
- Book a professional tune-up if you haven't in the past two years. Expect $150–$350 for a service call in Kamloops, which typically includes refrigerant checks, coil cleaning, and electrical inspection.

6. Inspect Driveways, Walkways, and Concrete

DIY covers filters, gutters, and caulking.
